Oregon Expands Free Tax Filing Options for 2025

SALEM, OR – October 4, 2024

Oregon taxpayers will have a new free electronic filing option for their 2025 tax returns, thanks to a partnership between the IRS and the Oregon Department of Revenue. The collaboration allows taxpayers to e-file both federal and state taxes for free through the combination of IRS Direct File and Direct File Oregon.

This marks an expansion of a pilot program launched during the 2024 tax season, which was limited to specific tax situations. For 2025, the program will accommodate more filing options, including Forms 1099 for interest income over $1,500 and retirement income. The U.S. Treasury Department estimates that 30 million taxpayers across the country will benefit from this program, with 640,000 Oregonians expected to utilize the service.

Governor Tina Kotek hailed the program as a “game-changer” for taxpayers, emphasizing the potential savings in both time and money. “This free filing option is an equitable opportunity to save Oregonians time and money, regardless of their income,” Kotek stated.

Betsy Imholt, Director of the Oregon Department of Revenue, also praised the new service, noting that it will create a seamless and cost-free way for Oregonians to file their taxes. She added, “Connecting Direct File Oregon with the IRS Direct File option beginning next year will give Oregon taxpayers a seamless way to electronically file both their federal and state income tax returns—and do both for free.”

This initiative is part of the Treasury Department’s goal to provide a seamless, nationwide free filing system, making tax season more accessible and efficient for millions of Americans.
